“Halal” is an Arabic word that translates into “permissible” or “lawful” and refers to Islamic dietary requirements. For instance, a halal burger or fresh halal meat has been prepared following Islamic dietary laws and regulatory requirements.
Globalisation has helped transform the way non-Muslims understand the concept of halal food. Nowadays, an extensive range of halal food is sold in grocery stores, big-box super markets and in multiple variants.
The following page will examine halal burgers, their ingredients, and the process of preparing a halal beef burger patty.
What Is A Halal Beef Patty?
The general understanding is that a halal beef patty contains halal meat, which has been prepared following Islamic dietary laws. The preparation of halal meat requires all animals to be fed and raised on an organic natural diet to ensure that the quality halal meat is free from any synthetic growth hormones or impurities.
Once an animal is sent to an abattoir, it will be slaughtered using Islamic practices. The animal must be killed by a Muslim, who will then pronounce the word of Allah (God) before slaughtering the animal.
There is a particular method involved in slaughtering any animal that is meant for consumption by a Muslim consumer. Animals are required to be alive before being slaughtered. Next, a swift cut to the throat should ensure that the carotid artery, jugular vein and windpipe are slid open. All slaughthered animals, including lamb, chicken and beef, and other livestock considered halal will need to have their blood drained before being further processed.
Although each halal product has multiple variants, such as produce, and other livestock, excluding pork, need to be raised and cared for on organic farms or producers. Not only are these practices considered better for environmental sustainability, but animals raised in stress-free grass fed enviornments tend to deliver more fresh meat, that not only tastes better, but has improved traceability.
Do halal burgers taste different?
This will mostly depend on the type of ingredients used for each halal burger, however, the general understanding is that the halal meat used in a halal burger tends to be healthier, and contain less impurities, such as blood, additives or growth hormones. This could have an impact on the flavour profile of the burger.
Are halal burgers healthier?
Some research may suggest that a halal burger is healthier than one that does not have halal certification. The halal meat used in a halal burger would have followed Islamic dietary laws, which require animals to be fed an organic diet that is free from hormones. Another requirement is that all blood be drained from the animal before being sent for further processing.
The combination of factors used throughout the supply chain would ensure that halal meat remains fresher and free from meat-based pathogens. In the long-term, this could have an effect on the consumer, as there is limited exposure to harmful growth hormones and pesticides that are present in the non-Muslim agricultural production chain.
What Are The Ingredients In Halal Burgers?
All ingredients used in a halal burger will be similar to those in a regular burger, however, there may be variations, depending on where a person purchases their halal burger patties from.
For starters, the main ingredient in any halal burger will be the halal beef patty. Using the best halal meat ensures that all halal burger patties contain fresh halal meat that adheres to Islamic and regulatory standard requirements.
Aside from this, other ingredients may include freshly cut tomato, iceberg lettuce, or onions. The bun that is used for the burger should be certified halal and should be free from any alcohol, animal products or synthetic ingredients.
Finally, a sauce helps to elevate the flavour profile of each halal burger. Sauce should be made using fresh ingredients, and do not contain alcohol. Depending on how the halal burger is prepared, spices such as sumac or za’atar may be added as seasoning to further elevate the burger’s taste.
What Does HMC Certification Mean?
All halal meat online and sold in-store requires Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) Certification. The HMC was established to ensure that all Muslim consumers have access to fresh, safe and halal-friendly meat. The organisation is an independent entity and a registered charity that inspects and certifies Halal meat.
HMC certification helps Muslim consumers consume “genuine” halal meat. The rigorous princess ensures that all affiliated abattoirs, farmers and production facilities adhere to Islamic dietary requirements, and follow agricultural and logistical health and safety protocols.
For any halal product to end up on the shelves of any grocer, multiple HMC representatives will conduct inspections at facilities and stores. All products are labelled with a tracking number before making their way through the supply chain. This process allows the HMC and affiliates to monitor all products in the supply chain.
The HMC employs individual inspectors who work alongside HMC operatives to monitor the entire supply chain across the United Kingdom. By conducting inspections, at random, HMC representatives can monitor whether products sold under HMC certification are genuine, and adhere to their quality standards.
The Halal Monitoring Committee is the United Kingdom’s most trusted independent halal certification and monitoring organisation.
Why Are Halal Burgers Becoming More Popular?
Changes in consumer behaviour, coupled with more widespread access to high-quality halal burgers are among the many reasons why halal meat and halal burgers have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years.
Hamburgers are eaten across the world and are often the go-to choice for any consumer looking for a filling and nutritious meal. Halal burgers allow Muslim consumers to indulge in a variety of food that meets their religious dietary requirements.
Not only this, but halal burgers are finding appeal among non-Muslim consumers. Halal meat tends to be cleaner, healthier, and better quality due to how it’s processed. This has become a popular option among non-Muslims looking to avoid GMO-based products or meat.
Other ingredients used in a halal burger may also be healthier, and sometimes fresher. Nearly all ingredients need to remain fresh and free from any non-natural chemicals, such as pesticides. The ingredients used in any sauce or bun should be free from alcohol and have been made using fresh and organic ingredients.
